FAQ

  • What is Shoals Marine Laboratory exactly?
Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) is a one-of-a-kind research facility that focuses on marine research and sustainability. It is located on Appledore Island in Maine and is only reachable by boat. The lab is operated by both Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire, and emphasizes hands on learning. Since 1966, students have traveled all across the country to spend the summer on Appledore Island and study at Shoals. SML's goal is to engage students in experiential learning and to foster sustainable initiatives that continue to reduce the island's carbon footprint. Appledore Island is not connected to any utilities on the mainland, and instead provides all of its own via our "green grid" powered by solar and wind energy generated on Appledore (in combination with a back-up diesel generator). Further sustainable measures include: Food composting, rainwater collection systems for flushing toilets and gardening, energy efficient appliances and lights, recycling, and composting toilets in many of the island's buildings to reduce both wastewater and freshwater consumption. SML is continually looking to improve its energy efficiency and the island strives to be as sustainable as possible, which is why it is so important to have the Sustainable Engineering Internship (SEI) program. Past SEI interns have worked on many of the island's sustainable initiatives which have now been incorporated into daily island life. In addition to serving as a marine lab, the island was home to a grand hotel at the turn of the century which has since burned down and it has served as an outpost during WWII. • Can I visit Shoals Marine Laboratory and Appledore Island?
Yes! Hop on a boat and spend the day exploring Appledore on a walking tour, visit Celia Thaxter's historic garden, come for the science or to paint or write, and participate in Shoal's volunteer weekend! Learn more about visiting Appledore and Shoals Marine Laboratory and all the unique experiences you can be a part of at https://shoalsmarinelaboratory.org/public-education You can also intern at Shoals! For opportunities, check here!
  • Can I get an internship at Shoals?
Of course you can! Internships are primarily for undergraduate students, but graduate students may apply as well! Internship focus ranges from marine mammals to sustainable engineering, and communications to gull population biology! Internship lengths vary (see individual internship pages for more details).
